Depth of Field / Selective Focus Notes

MyProProject Suggestions

1. Focus on a near object or person.

2. Have a recognizable distant background that is not too far away.

3. You will have one picture (Depth of Field) with the foreground subject and the background in acceptable focus and the second picture (Selective Focus) with the exact same scene with the foreground subject in focus and the background out of focus.

4. You will print two 5x7 prints, you do not need to turn in a test strip or a contact strip for this assignment however you should make the test strip and analysis the pictures prior to printing from your contact sheet.

5. Both prints should be the same size, image cropping and tone value.

6. The distance range of acceptable focus or depth of field is controled by the aperature opening. The wider the aperature lens opening the smaller the amount of distance range in acceptable focus, the smaller the aperature lens opening the larger the distance range in acceptable focus.

7. Exposure suggestions for sunny day:

Depth of Field - Sunny Day

shutter speed 1/125 at an aperature of fll, or 1/250 at f8

Selective Focus

shutter speed 1/500 at f5.6, or 1/1000 at f4

8. Note you will not see the difference in your camera as you change the f-stops, unless you have a Depth-of-Field Preview Button.
