Matisse Cut-outs

Henri Matisse during his later years of his life continued his artistic expression although bed-ridden by cutting out of construction paper compositions.

My Process

1. Create a library of 20 organic, 20 geometric shapes and 10 symbolic shapes.

2. Divide your sketchbook page into 4 boxes by dividing it into fours.

3. Create four interesting compositions using the shapes in your library and any new shapes you would like to create. You must use at least 25 shapes. 10 minimum organic and geometric and 5 minimum symbolic shapes. You must follow the compositional rules provided below. Remember to break up the background by using large shapes to make the background as interesting as the foreground. Becareful your symbolic shapes do not create a scene. I wish to see a composition that is not distracted by a picture scene.

4. The teacher will help you choose the best composition and initial the chosen design.

5. Color the composition using the colors shown below. You should create a balance of colors by creating triangular arangements of colors. The teacher will help you with your selections and approve your color study.

6. Recreate your composition on a large white sheet of paper using pencil. Do this lightly so that you can easily make changes.

7. Take tracing paper and trace the individual shapes one by one and transfer the shapes to the appropriate colored construction paper. Then cut them out and flip them over onto the colored background paper selection.

8. Remember that you can cut out the larger shapes first and then cut out the smaller shapes to lay on top so not to have any strange gaps in between.

9. Finally once everything is cut out and arranged, glue the shapes down using either white glue or a glue stick. The white glue may have a tendancy to wrinkle the page if to much is used and the glue sticks are not nearly as permenant.

Compositional Rules

Rule #1 - Use a variety of shapes, colors, and sizes.

Rule #2 - Direct your eye to an emphasis.

Rule #3 - Repeat similar shapes, colors and sizes.

Rule #4 - Shapes should extend off the page on all sides of the paper.

Rule #5 - No shapes should end on the edge of the paper.

Rule #6 - Remember a balance of weights, values, and objects.

Rule #7 - Odd number of shapes are better than even.

Rule #8 - Overlapping shapes creates interest and helps to lead you eye.2n

Rule #9 - Break up the background space by using large background shapes

Rule #10 - You can use the positive shapes and also the remaining negative shapes
