"Connections is in its second year at Helix. The first three weeks of Geography focuses on "connecting" students to Helix.

The 5 Themes of Geography is an introductory unit which lays a foundation for the thematic and regional geography that follows in future units.

The North America unit focuses on the United States, Canada and Mexico. Throughout this unit, this region is examined physically, politically and culturally. One specific focus is the development of regional differences within a nation.

Through the study of the European Unit, students learn many factors that have lead to the political nations of Europe. The physical geography of Europe is instrumental in the current configuation of the nations. This unit has a specific focus on positive and negative efficts of Urbanization in Europe.

Latin America consists of regions of North and South America that have similar physical, political and cultural structures. One regional concept which we will explore in depth is the role of Developing Nations in this changing world.

The Middle East is a region that is connected through a variety of political, physical and cultural ties. This region will be crucial to the lives of your children and grandchilren. Since religion plays an important role in understanding the Middle East Conflict, World Relgions will be the focus of thematic instruction throughout this unit.

Asia is the largest continent on Earth, therefore, this unit will focus on specific regions of this continent (India, East Asia, Southeast Asia). In addition, population trends, patterns, and population growth will be examined in relationship to the impact on the Earth's resources.

The Africa unit focuses on the Sub-Saharan Region. Much of Northern Africa is covered in the study of the Middle East. The thematic issues addressed are a combination of human and environmental impacts of problems this regions faces.

In an effort to better prepare students for Advanced Placement, Honors Geography will research then write a cited research paper. Most likely, the focus of the paper will be embedded within a specific unit of study.
