Health Education Leadership Program
The Health Education Leadership Program is a combined course open to
12th grade students at Helix High School. Students enroll in 3
classes; Science Research Seminar, Business English, and a special
section of Economics. These courses together form a capstone program
for students involved in the Human Health Career Path and the Science
Education Partnership Award. As such, the resources of the SEPA
program are available for students and it is through this program
that students will establish and run the public health education
organizaton for the school. In the HELP program, students will be
expected to produce their required Senior Research Paper and their
required Senior Project. Both of these are required of all seniors
for graduation. However, with this group, it is expected that papers
and projects will be involved with informing others about current
issues of human health. Not only will students produce their own
specialized project but they will help organize themselves so that
their projects are actually presented to target audiences in the
local middle schools and elementary schools that feed into either
Helix or Morse high schools.
Of course, to produce quality educational projects, students will
have to conduct research, acquire knowledge and skills, and work
together to coordinate it all. In addition to meeting these goals,
students will have to cover and complete coursework from 12th grade
English and Economics courses. However, topics and principles covered
in these courses will use materials and examples from the health
issues. Teachers from these three different courses work together to
coordinate curriculum and have some common projects.
