The opening unit in Honors Geography has two purposes. Initially,
the unit is designed around orientating students to the technology
components that are a major aspect of this course. Technology
will be practiced and implemented through tutorials. In addition,
content
for the course introduces students to the text, An Introduction
to Human Geography, and activities and lessons are focused
on this text. Chapter 1 - Thinking Geographically is the basis
of the content.
Students will also be focused on "learning how to study" more
effectively as they create study groups and successful study habits
for a Honors level course.
Each unit contains powerpoints useful
to compliment the text. The "Web Activities" are also designed
to
compliment that course
content. Through these "Web Activities" students will explore,
learn, and apply new content through a variety of web sites.
This unit also
utilizes ArcView to learn to "apply" geographic skills. ArcView
is a computer program that allows students to manipulate
data sets which
then allows them to make and/or prove different hypothesis' about
the content.
While much of the instruction in class is designed to teach, explore,
and learn new content, it is equally important for students to
demonstrate understanding. Students will demonstrate their understanding
through "threaded discussions/conferencing" (hosted on www.nicenet.org)
and through online quizzing/testing (hosted on www.quia.com). Future
units will use these sites as well as require students to apply
their understanding through different technological projects.
