Course
Description:
Marine Science
is a second year science program at Helix. This course incorporates many
of the concepts found in the major sciences, i.e. physics, chemistry,
biology and geology. The course is fast paced and requires that you keep
up daily with the content.

HOW TO STAY AFLOAT IN HELIX CHARTER MARINE
SCIENCE
TARDIES
You are expected to be in your seat and ready to begin class when the
bell sounds.Work missed
due to lockout cannot be made up and will drastically reduce your buoyancy.
CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR
Your best behavior is expected at all times, don’t tip the boat.
- Playing around in the lab = student removal from lab with zero credit
- Cheating = Loss of credit and referral to VP, reoccurrence results in
drop from class.
- Copying Homework = Both papers will be thrown away NO MAKE UP.
CLASS INFO
1. You are expected to conduct yourself in a MATURE AND SAFE MANNER while
in this classroom or out in the field. Failure to do so will result in
suspension from future activities.
2. Always bring to class the following: the Marine Science Workbook in
a 3-ring binder, your interactive notebook, writing implements, and supplies.
BE PREPARED AND BE SUCCESSFUL!
3. During lecture/discussion periods adhere to the rule of one person
speaking at a
time. Tremendous amounts of time can be saved following these simple rules
of
common courtesy.
4. Lab days will end with a clean up period. This time is set aside for
returning the
lab and equipment to an orderly state. Dismissal will not occur unless
all is in ship shape.
5. Care for and respect school supplies and equipment. We are running
scare on
both supplies and funds. Irresponsibility adds cost and irritation. Broken
and stolen items cannot be replaced readily. Watch out for all aboard,
we’re on this ship together.
6. Be prepared to turn in homework at the beginning of class. I DO NOT
ACCEPT
LATE ASSIGNMENTS WITHOUT A PARENT OR GUARDIAN SIGNATURE. Wednesday tutorial
at 8:05.
7. If you have an excused absence (seasickness?), you have 3 days to make
up any
missed work, including tests. It is your responsibility to see that make-
ups are
turned in on time. Work or tests not made up in a timely manner will result
in a
ZERO in the grade book. Pop quizzes and video quizzes cannot be made up.
Most missed labs cannot be made up.
REMEMBER TO EXCHANGE PHONE NUMBERS WITH A PARTNER IN THE CLASS TO ASSIST
WITH MISSED WORK DURING AN ILLNESS.
GRADES
Grades are determined on a point system. Tests are graded on a curve,
this is known as a floating standard grading scale. It floats around due
to the relative buoyancy of you and your classmates. The point distribution
is as follows:
25% TESTS, 25% FORMAL LAB REPORTS, 20% CLASSWORK
(labs and activities), 30% NOTEBOOKS AND HOMEWORK.
A = 100 – 90% B = 89 – 80% C = 79 – 70% D = 68 –
69% F =below 68%
Marine Science/ Coordinated Science 3/ 4 is a demanding course. We use
materials from scientific sources and proceed at a rapid pace. It requires
systematic work on your part. STAY ON COURSE!
NOTEBOOKS
You will be constructing your marine science notebook. This is your LIFE
RAFT! Keep up with your notebook and it will be smooth sailing, fall behind
and the wake will catch you. It is your responsibility to keep track of
your Marine Science Workbook, a $10.00 fee will be charged for replacement.
