A. Library Hours and Rules:
Welcome to the Helix High School Library!
The staff of the library

Mrs. Skullerud, Library Media Teacher

Mrs. Potter, Library Media Teacher

Mrs. Crabtree, Library Assistant

Mrs. Chaffin, Library Technician

The library is open from 7:15 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. during school days.

There are

three IMPORTANT rules

to follow in the library:

  • Study quietly.
  • No food or drink.
  • No gum.

What will happen if a student does not follow these three simple rules?

The consequence for not studying quietly OR for eating or drinking in the Helix Library is to lose Library privileges for four weeks.

The consequence for chewing gum in our Library is to help beautify the Library by scraping gum from the underneath of Library tables. We appreciate the help!

1. You should have your own password to use the Helix computers. Be sure that you will NEVER FORGET the password!

2. Get Job Aide to install printer. You will need to change the printer each time you print in a different room on campus. Don’t Forget!! You are responsible to pay for the pages you print.

3. Open another window on the internet, keeping this page open for instructions.

Go to the Helix Home Page. Click on “Library” on the RIGHT side.
Go to Helix Online Library Catalog.
* Choose a country. Search for a book about that country. Type your country name into the search bar.Look right under the words “Search Results” on the screen. It will tell you the number of records or books. It is helpful to know how many books or other materials are available on your topic.

Notice the Call Numbers for the first two books in the list. Example: Call number: 456.7 Jones
A call number is how you will find the books on the shelves. Every books has an "address" or location in our Library.

Look at the Call Numbers in your list of books. Can you tell if a book is Fiction or Nonfiction?

Fiction book call number: FIC Jones

Nonfiction book call number: 641.14 Smith (Notice that Nonfiction books have NUMBERS!)

D. Using Online Computers for Research:
1 . Return to the “Helix Home Page” by clicking on the little house icon at the top of the screen.
2. Next, type: google.com into the URL ADDRESS LINE. This is your search engine.
When you are in google.com, type: cia factbook. (Notice that “Factbook” is all one word!)
3. Then select: CIA World Factbook. (Probably the first listing.)
4. Now, go to “Country Listing”, select your country. Click on the country.
5. Click on “People” under the Title of the country. Scroll down to “Ethnic Group.”
What is the first Ethnic Group listed and what is the percentage for that ethnicity?
