Assessment
The purpose of this study is to determine
whether enough benefits will accrue to people involved in this
program to recommend the implementation of this kind of program in
other schools and communities that have a Medical school nearby or a
Community based science education support infrastructure.
The assessment of this study has been
designed and administered by Georgia Sadler, PhD.Public Health, at
the UCSD Cancer Center. Assessment includes the identification of
indicator instruments, the formation of significant demographic
instruments, data collection, entry, interpretation and analysis.
Assistance with all these has been provided by her staff and, in
particular, volunteer UCSD graduates Lara Shumer and Michael
Crowe.
Instruments include the COPS test, (a
national interest inventory), another interest inventory test, data
on student reading levels, and Grades, Assent and Consent forms for
compliance with Human Subjects Research, and Demographic baseline
surveys from both parents and students.
A comparison between the control groups
and intervention test groups, should determine if interest in health
care careers has increased due to this program. It will also reflect
on whether student performance may improve due to the interventions
and educational changes that accompany this program. It is expected
that the unique features of this program will have a significant
positive impact on the students involved and analysis of the data
should confirm or deny this expectation.
