Currently Teaching Coordinated
Science at Helix Charter High
School in La Mesa, California. My
classes are participating in a National Institutes of Health
(NIH) financed study known as a Science Education
Partnership Award (SEPA grant). This is a partnership between, Helix
Charter High School, Morse High
School the Medical
School at the University of California San Diego, and the San Diego Science
Alliance.
Life (condensed)
At birth, I was sentenced to
serve 17 years in the gulag of suburbs surrounding Chicago. My warden
firmly ascribed to the motto, "Arbeit Macht Frei". Freedom was
granted to those who embraced a value structure that judged human
worth by materialistic and racial standards. Unable to accept these
conditions, my only option was escape. Immediately after high school,
what began as a mental escape became physical -- warmth and freedom
were mine! Eventually, I received a degree in English
from The University of
the South in Sewanee
Tennessee. However this odyssey had several stops along the way with
substantial time in San Francisco and Sydney, Australia. In addition,
the time was punctuated by several personally important events, like
illness, death in the family, introduction to the Baha'i
Faith, love and marriage.
I started teaching in a small Southern Appalachian elementary school
in Sequatchie, Tennessee. From there, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and
another BA at Florida Atlantic
University. Next came
Bolivia where I taught in the American Schools in
Cochabamba and Santa Cruz, then started and ran the California
Language Institute in Santa Cruz, Bolivia. After several years in
South America, my wife, Leslie, and I returned to the U.S. so I could
earn a Masters in Educational Administration at San Diego
State University. About
that time 2 daughters arrived and we decided to stay for awhile in
San Diego. I taught science at Morse High School for many years and
have now expanded the grant I am working with to incorporate Helix
Charter High School. If you really want more info about me, e-mail
and ask for my resume.
Professional Involvements and
Activities
Computers in Education
I am particularly interested in
how computers are used in education. Toward that end, I produced a
report on benchmark schools and their use of computer networks. I
have also created a Technology
Guide for Teachers
which contains ideas, links and a package of download-able
HTML
tools.
These links are extensive and
divided into categories which include: Search Engines, Directories, General References,
Science Interests, Other Academic Interests, and HTML Guides, Tools
and Examples. These
sites are old and since addresses and content of sites change a lot,
the links are not guaranteed to work nor has the content been
reviewed. They reflect what I believed to be useful or interesting at
the time they were bookmarked.
