The 1999/ 2000
Objectives for the HHS Literacy Program:
- Raise the level of reading
comprehension for all students
- RaiseSAT 9 scores across
all grade levels
- Encourage the teaching of
reading through coaching and collegiality
- Conduct ongoing assessment
and data collection of reading levels at Helix
Our Progress
to Date:
- Curriculum development for HHS literacy
program- summer 1999
- Lets Get Literate -taught
8 hour workshop for Grossmont's Summer Institute, 8/99
- Whole staff development presentation
(August 1999)
- Tested majority of 9th
graders on C.P.A. ? a computerized reading assessment
- Compiled C.P.A. data and presented
it to Helix Staff
- Conducted monthly literacy meetings
for Freshmen English & Geography Teachers
- Created data assessment tools
- Ongoing classroom visitations (documented
observations and coaching)
- Whole staff literacy training presentation
(September 22nd & December 5th)
- Attended SD County Strengthening
Literacy Through Contenttraining
- Tested majority of 9th
graders on Gates-McGinitie (District's reading assessment tool)
- Compiled Gates-McGinitie data (EXL,
Academy, Honors) and presented results to staff
- Conducted Reading Program survey
through departments
- Action Research-Speed Reading for
Comprehension (compiled data)
- Collecting and reviewing 9th
grade teacher self-assessment literacy forms
- Presented progress to the Helix Charter
Board at the December 1999 meeting
We are currently
working on the following:
- Develop & compile core reading
comprehension strategies
- Link new reading strategies and existing
writing competencies into Literacy Program
- Continue teacher observations &
coaching with targeted HHS Literacy goal strategies
- Teaching test taking skills to HHS
students - beginning w/ 9th graders
- Continue speed reading action research
through next quarter & hold teacher training workshop for the HHS Literacy Team
- Analyze results from the diagnostic
SAT test administered in October '99
- Compile Helix teacher training manual
from "best" strategies and lessons (summer 2000)
- Promote use of expository text &
support strategies DURING CLASS TIME
