Funk's Geometry Classroom Policies
Goals: Students will develop the reasoning skills required to put
together a mathematical proof. They will study and
understand mathematical relationships in plane geometry
(two dimensional). They will continue to develop their
algebraic skills such as graphing and equation solving.
All students must be prepared to be successful in
advanced algebra (Algebra 2C), the next course in
the college preparatory sequence.
Classroom
Rules: One of our schools primary duties is to teach a person the
behaviors and skills to be successful in our world.
The rules in my class aim to do this and they are
very easy to follow. In simple terms, everyone has
the right to listen in class without distractions
from other students, usually in the form of excessive
talking. Furthermore, it is important for quick learners
to have patience while others figure out concepts
they find difficult. Also, everyone is responsible
to contribute to classroom discourse and to help create
an environment where alternative ideas or methods
are welcomed.
Come
prepared to learn and to work.
This course is preparation for a college preparatory
advanced algebra course. A good student comes prepared
to contribute to the class discussion. Bring the materials
described below and be ready to write, to read and
to think deeply about math. Your assignments should
be neat and well thought out. Draw diagrams and pictures,
if necessary. Write down your ideas. Read and re-read
problems until you understand them.
Consequences: Parents will
quickly be consulted about any improper behavior or
lack of effort. If the situation persists, you will be
referred to counselors or the vice-principal. You
will be dropped from the class if these measures do
not improve the situation.
Materials
needed daily: A pencil and a notebook are needed every day. For notebooks,
I recommend Cambridge quadrille graph paper pads.
The student can do all their homework and note-taking
in these. Rulers, compasses, and protractors are also
very helpful because we will draw and analyze many
diagrams. A scientific calculator is also very helpful.
I recommend a TI-34 (about $20) or a graphing calculator
TI-83 plus (about $100).
Grades: Based on a point
system:
Assignments:
5 points each (see assignment rubric)
15%
Presentations:
10 points each (see presentation rubric)
5%
Quizzes and exams: 50 -100 points each, usually
each chapter 70%
Final: multiple choice and written response,
200 points
10%
A: 100 Ð 90%,
B: 89 Ð 80%,
C: 79 Ð 70%, D: 69 Ð 60%, F: Below 60%
Making
Up Work: Assignments must be ready to be turned in the next school
day. For each day a student is absent, they have a
day to make up their assignments. Quizzes and exams
are made up after school or during an open period
in the studentÕs schedule. When a test is missed,
the student should contact me ASAP to arrange for
make-up. Students should always keep in touch with
me about missed assignments. Good communication with
me will always help you.
