Scottie Link

As an eighth grader graduating from Middle School the main worry is high school and how the older kids will treat a small freshmen. In an attempt to make the change from from Middle School to High School easier, ASB President Cosabeth Bullock began a program called Scottie Link. The program works by gathering incoming freshmen and Helix seniors interested and then every freshmen is 'linked' with a senior.

On orientation day the incoming freshmen and seniors meet. The senior is then responsible for giving the freshmen a tour of the Helix campus as well as answering any questions they may have about the four year journey which lies in front of them. Cosa, "wanted to do a project that could positively impact Helix and its students" and with junior Jane Zeyak prepared to continue the project this year, Cosa has done an excellent job in beginning a very beneficial program.

No Second Chances (top)

Three young ladies; Sajar Miakhil, Lauren Ybarra and Lauren Menzel organized and presented the 'No Second Chances' program. The purpose of the program is to make the Helix students and involved community members aware of the importance in preventing drinking and driving. Working directly with officer Brian Stoney, the senior girls put together an impacted assembly in which victim's families of a drinking and driving incident shared their sad stories of loss.

Also, thirty students participated as "The Living Dead." Those students were taken out of class and then returned paint covering their face, their obituary was read and for the remainder of the day didn't speak or show any expression, they were simply to be considered by their classmates as "The Living Dead." Sajar believes "this senior project educated the next generation of society on a very important issue of drinking and driving and its negative effects.

The no second chances group is ready to change lives as they prepare to educate their fellow students about drunk driving.

Peer Mediation (top)

As a peer mediator at Helix, Kristin Ritchey decided that her Senior Project would get other students at Helix involved with Peer Mediation as well. With consultant Mrs. Vickery, who is not only a counselor at Helix but also the peer mediation advisor, by her side Kristin put together a weekend of Peer Mediation activities. The project took place in the Helix library making the location very accessible for any interested students to attend.

Although those involved worked hard, with continuous activities, they received free snacks and lunch throughout their hours spent there. The project cost Kristin approximately $200 spent on food and supplies. Overall, with the negative pressures teens face daily, having trained peer mediators on campus is definitely an excellent resource.
